SEBASTIAN

With constructive vocation, since the mid-60s began developing his sculptural language supporting their work with scientific disciplines such as mathematics and geometry, approaching the topology and crystallography. The work of Sebastian is generated to the time when artistic trends such as scientism, minimalism, op-art, pop art, etc. originate, expressed and then with creations like his transformable structures, including their Leonardo4 works, Durero4, Brancusi4, mathematical models transformed into sculpture, where the digit mentioned refers to the fourth dimension, these works are proof of its concern participatory art, fundamental concept of his first artistic motivations.

It is then when he defines his vocation as a large-format sculptor, causing urban projects where the viewer interaction is the main actor. In 1970 he published his World's Largest Sculpture, being then only a conceptual manifesto sought the creation of such a large sculpture that kasbah hardly be contained by the globe and only peeped some parts of it at certain points. Being a sculptor urban monumental work, today Sebastian has made this project with more than 200 urban works in different parts of the world.

His production mainly covers urban monumental sculpture and architectural design, painting, design objects, furniture, public art, jewelry, theatrical costume design, set design, multimedia shows, etc. Currently combines his artistic work with research and teaching at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and the Instituto Tecnológico de Monterrey, both at Mexico City, where he teaches Sculpture Workshop and Visualization and Multimedia.


Sebastian has been recognized with numerous awards since his youth. Was elected as a member of the Academy of Arts in The Hague, in the Netherlands in 1983. He has presented exhibitions of his works in major museums in Mexico; at the Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of the Palacio de las Bellas Artes, in the Tamayo Museum and the Museum of Science and Arts of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, the Palacio de Minería and the Museum of San Ildefonso. He is currently a member of the Mexican Academy of Arts, Member of the Legion of National Honor has received awards such as La Medaille de la Ville de Paris, the Jerusalem Prize, among other awards, and numerous awards for his work in Mexico and Japan.

Sebastian has made the exhibition of his monumental work in cities like Mexico City, Xalapa (Veracruz), Jerusalem (Israel), Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), Lodeve (France), Paris (France), Venice (Italy), Berlin ( Germany), among others.

 

Numerous publications have been made about his sculptural work, emphasizing among them "Geometría Emocional" with the introductory note of Arq. Oscar Niemeyer and texts of Jorge Volpi, "La obra monumental de Sebastian", "Sebastian por Francisco Martin Moreno", "Sebastian" by Americo Publishers in 1996,"Sebastian, un ensayo sobre arte contemporáneo" by Ida Rodriguez Prampolini, among many others.


Doctor Honoris Causa 2014 by the Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México, in 2011 by the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (Mexico City)  and the Universidad de Colima, in 2008 by The City College of the City University of New York, in 2005 by the Universidad de Chihuahua, and by la Universidad de la Laguna (Coahuila, Mexico) in 2003.

 

His work is found in numerous museums and collections of national and international art.
